Higher Invertebrates includes two groups by the modern science and by the scientists which are molluscs and arthropods:-

Molluscs, comprising of 72000species living in fresh water, ocean and on the land. These animals are soft bodied, unregimented and generally protected by hard, calcareous shell. Some of the well known members of this group are mussels, clams, snails, slugs, oysters, squids, cattle fishes and octopuses. The last three moll uses are divided of shell and possess 8 to 10 long arms with power full suckers by which they capture their prey.

Some species of octopus and squid attain a very huge size. Giant squid is the largest invertebrate having a length up to 55 feet.

Arthropods are the most highly developed forms amongst invertebrates, numerically surpassing all the other groups combined, having as many as 6, 40,000 species. Except the few lowest forms, all the arthropods are terrestrial. The body of these animals is segmented, bilaterally symmetrical and is provided with "appendages". There is a hard outer skeleton covering the whole body.

Examples are crayfish, others being prawns, crabs, centipedes, millipedes, spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites and large number of insects viz. Butterfly, housefly, bed bug, human house, beetles, grass hoppers and cockroach.
