If a company needs to run a system removed from it's main LAN network, but still wants to maintain a connection remotely, then one method would be a VPN network.

A VPN (which stands for virtual private network) works by providing a private network with connectivity through the public internet, but also the facility to run independently of a local area network (LAN).

You'd be surprised how many companies are moving away from LANs, and looking to systems that will effectively remove them from the central network. It's just important that the chosen method used to run the network is secure and reliable, and VPN fits that criteria.

To enable the connectivity to the company's network, this new remote system would use the Internet.

While that might sound risky because company data is travelling through public channels, it is made safe through encryption.

If someone were to try and intercept the data, they would be unable to read it because it would be encrypted.
