There's a lovely bushland area just a couple of kilometres from home. Very peaceful, very pretty, a scattering of wildlife (including the occasional kangaroo). Can't think of a nicer spot.

I am a Catholic and I will simply state the Church's basic position on the issue.  I will comment afterward.

"Keeping ashes at home or scattering them on land or sea, even where legal, is inappropriate to the Church's deep reverence for the body as a place where the soul has resided."

It has been noted elsewhere that the Catholic Church tends to react to issues that wind up on her doorstep.

The Church has modified it view of cremation for a few good reasons.  It does maintain however that the resulting "cremains"  must receive a proper burial in consecrated ground.

I might think that disposal of my ashes (haven't decided yet on donating my body to science or some other disposal route) might resonate for me if it were in some place specifically meaningful to me; but I personally see no reason to not follow the Church's requirement to place me in that consecrated ground.

I certainly can't fault any non-Catholic for their personal decisions in the matteer, however.
