In a truly free society, such as we aspire to be, there is no conscionable reason to repress free thought, to deny the opportunity to discover truth in one's own way, unencumbered by the moribund thinking of the past.

Encouraging the Freedom of Mind is absolutely positive, IMO it is imperative and, on this example, long overdue.

Dear Zee,
One of the newer Blurt members has asked a question about one of the spiritualists of the late 19th-early 20th centuries...

This kind of message is the epitome of being open minded in our pursuit of knowledge.

My favorite part about Atheism is that they want you to think for yourself, to evalute everything based on your own thoughts and experiences instead of what everyone else tells you; unless, of course, your own conclusions, your own evaluations, lead to Christianity or another religion. Then, you're no longer a free-thinker or open minded. I'm not trying to start something, I just find it rather ironic.

That is an interesting outlook Corey.
I think I understand you . . . are you saying the concept behind Pursuit of Knowledge and free thought need not exclude religious beliefs involving God/Gods?
Corey The Goofyhawk
That's exactly what I was thinking, Dark.

atheism is a farce, a lie people tell themselves in order to be different from everyone else its a notion that is not grounded in reality the existence that we have cannot have come about on its own but thru the hand of an all powerful all knowing architect there's two realities either we excist because we were created or we do not excist at all that's it

" . . . a lie people tell themselves in order to be different from everyone else its a notion that is not grounded in reality." -

So, because more people believe in some form of God, those who decided to either forgo indoctrination, be able to find fulfillment within themselves, or be brought up to base their concept of reality on demonstrable empirical evidence are just "Trying" to be different? While I do find this concept of "The majority" is always correct, even if they cannot possibly prove it." it is common knowledge that Christianity was NOT historically the majority belief . . yet it thrived (with those wanted to believe . . to be different from everyone else?) . . for a time.

Also - " . . . a notion that is not grounded in reality." - means you are either in possession of a notion that IS grounded in reality, or you just KNOW that atheism isn't but have alternative to offer on what is . . . is this correct?

I think it sends a necessary message. Young people raised in a religious environment may question their beliefs but when their parents, friends and church associates all believe in God they may think that questioning what they have been taught is in some way "wrong" or ungrateful to the God they have been taught has given them so much.

An ad like this can only help them to realise that there are alternatives and that lots of people have rejected religion as a component of their lives.

Secular education is probably more necessary in the US than in most other Western countries, for America is mired in the religious thought of the 1950s. When I come on sites like this one, or Ask, I find it amazing that such an advanced nation is so far behind.

So, yes, I think it's a good presentation. It doesn't preach or proselytise but quietly presents an alternative to religious propaganda.

I was actually thinking maybe YOU had more of a perspective on the US...from your broad reading...

I have been concerned about the huge numbers attracted to Trump message, that many of those do represent a certain "tribal god" way of thinking...

I have not encountered Chris Kyle, and from your description not inclined to, either.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, Dozy...

Some time ago -- 20 or 30 years, I think -- we had a visit from an American Catholic "evangelist". He was doing the unusual in coming to Oz to promote Catholicism. I heard him interviewed on radio and he was asked how he differed from people like Billy Graham, who had visited a couple of times with his crusade.

He said, "In America, if we want to pass another motorist we blow our horn at him; in Europe they flash their lights. That's the difference. Dr Graham blows his horn, I flash my lights." I obviously thought it was a point well made because it's still held in my memory.

Dear DarkMajinn,

Yes...I like the commercial very much, and think it very much does send a positive message...refreshing, it just makes me feel good. I just don't think its message is (necessarily) atheist.

* * *

It was on Ask.com that I first encountered a brand of atheism that is more constricting than anything in my Christian upbringing (which I rejected at age 13).

I think that optimally, in the words of Sam Harris, "Atheism is just a way of clearing the space for better conversations"...and it certainly has been that for me, a powerful way to grow and flourish.

I was never force-fed...cannot even imagine what that would be like. My folks were themselves non-religious, but they felt it was important to have a knowledge of Christianity when you lived in a Christian nation.
So I got hauled to Sunday School for as long as I wanted to go, and I did enjoy it, and indeed always been glad for the information... just ultimately could not swallow it.

Why does faith in GOD and the pursuit of knowledge have to be mutually exclusive  I've been very intellectually minded all my life  I didn't become a Christian until I was in my 30s  That didn't stop m from using my (GOD given) intellect

No offense, Cookie, but we could start at why Adam and Eve got tossed from Eden (well, supposedly). It had to do with a Tree of Knowledge. It was man'sreligion that promoted the exclusivity.
Cookie Roma

Read the entire line. It wasn't the tree of "knowledge" ! It was the tree of "knowledge of good and evil"
Darik Majoren

You create a "Ceiling" or "Cap" to the real pursuit of knowledge if you cannot go beyond "God did it".
This stymies most "Free Thinkers" to ONLY look for evidence that that arrives to their preconceived conclusion.
