A thingamabob is an object that you're sure you know the name of but can't quite think of it. It is closely related to the doohickey and the whatchamacallit.

I remember, back in the day, an Australian cruciverbalist (he's a crossword setter) posted the clue "Emaciated Hope with no teeth. Whoozit." And the answer was thin-gummy-bob.

I use the shortened "thing" for everything. As in, "Baby, can you hand me that thing."Â I can't be bothered with remembering the names of every day objects. My family has become used to my weird speak, and after all these years they know what I'm talking about even when I don't. It's a word to use while you fake it till you make it.
The thingamajig who's name you just can't remember so you have to call it a thingamabob. I usually use "Thingamajig" and "thingy"
