I noticed on google earth there are a bunch of dead trees around where I live next to perfectly healthy ones. Anyone know what happened to them?

probably the pine beetle. We have that issue in B.C. They are slowly killing all the trees in the forests.

Could be any number of things. Some parts of the US are dealing with a type of beetle that bores only in one type of tree. In another part there is a fungus killing the evergreens. It could be remnants from a fire. Some trees can come back after being burned while others can't. Also it could be that the Google image was taken late fall, winter, or early spring where some trees will have foliage and others won't.

We've been losing a lot of trees here in California due to the prolonged drought.  100 years old trees are giving up the ghost.
