The US helps fund the TOR project so oppressed people can access the Net. But anybody can use TOR to reach the "dark web". Have you used it? How was your experience?
In the spirit of this question, should I have asked it anonymously?

No I have not. I have heard about the " dark web " but I've never used it and I never would cos I'm scared as' of what I might find  . A few weeks ago I was chatting with a friend and trying to remember an unusual book cover I once saw years ago .  So I googled " lesbians and horses " or some combination of those words...  And I'm kinda scarred for life now from the pics I saw :/ and that was just the "normal web". Then I started thinking what if I had a blood clot in my brain and died of an aneurism right then and that was the last history on my browser .. And my loved ones and friends saw that  ... I'm staying away from the " dark web " then , cos :/  .... Anyway ... This is the book cover I was looking for, I found it!!!  :)

BTW Jaimie, I want to thank you for making me feel guilty about asking no questions. It's been fun to think of some that might be interesting, and I've had lots of entertainment with the feedback. (If somebody takes the trouble to answer one of my questions I feel I owe them at least a comment and sometimes a discussion.) It's been fun. (And I still have about 20 questions on my list for the next few weeks.)

Maybe her and I should wait for the movie then .... I never thought I'd say that about a book :/ or have these thoughts keep me awake " A
misogynist- racist reality television star with the temperament of a 3 year old child may have his finger on a button to activate nuclear
weapons soon and I'd rather watch the movie then read the book" I'm honestly sad. I don't like any of this. This worlds whack to me right now

i downloaded tor once because yahoo answers kept suspending my accounts, decided to try tor to hid myself from yahoo but i accidently made my way to the dark web part (the links on tor are not informative so i had no idea what i clicked on but it wasn't cool. They were selling illegal drugs and what not.. It freaked me out so i deleted tor from my computer. (that was before i moved from windows to chrome os / chromebook... (i feel a lot safer now)

Thanks, Skunky. I've used TOR on the visible web only -- like you when I want to remain anonymous. I haven't tried the dark web and don't really want to. Lots of nasties there. But that doesn't mean I'm not curious about it.

I was curious about it also. Interesting but strange indeed.

Dear Didge,

No I have not used TOR (The Onion Router). Actually I learned about it from you, on Ask.com. I looked into it then, but the price you pay for the anonymity is apparently the NSA and others could be more likely to check on you...

It's interesting that TOR was developed by the US Department of Defense... now operated as a non-profit. The hassle of being a bit suspect would be worth it for journalists, police, people living in a dictatorship, that kind of situation...but I decided to stay on the regular web and just keep my nose clean.

And as for your anonymity in posting, I am glad you used your own ID.

I was trying to be ironic in suggesting that a question about TOR
Didge Doo

...should be anonymous. I'm glad you stopped by. I've used it to establish a couple of regular email addresses under the name of Ivan Hind. I also have an anonymous Facebook account under that name so that if I feel the need to enter Facebook to find something I'll have a way in.

Ivan, being Russian for John, and Hind being a simile for Doe, makes me John Doe.

So far I haven't found any use for the hidden identity and don't foresee any in the future, which is why I can share my hidden identity on an open web site. It was just one other aspect of the web to explore.

I'll admit I played with it some a couple years ago and also BLUNT. Dark web and very encrypted . Didn't really see a need for it for me but it was interesting about all the layers to hide e-mails and such. Too many weird sites for my taste but it was interesting for a bit. TOR and BLUNT remind me of Bangkok ! Anything you might want ? You can get.

I hadn't heard of BLUNT. TOR is respectable (it's a Mozilla browser, like Firefox, and follows the Firefox style) but the things you're likely to find on the deep web may not be.

I subscribe to a "How to Geek" newsletter and today's talked about the dark web and the US government's support to help people in censored countries to access any sites they want without getting caught. Hence my question.

That's one of their cover stories for it I guess. You can access anything there.

BLUNT is more black program stuff.
