Are haunted houses really haunted? And, if so, would you live in one? Would you consider keeping a ghost as a pet?

Hi Didge,

Well I am afraid I have been forever biased in favor of haunted houses,       ever since the 1947 movie THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR. Not only was Gene Tierney very beautiful, but Captain Daniel Gregg was played by Rex Harrison...

So yes, ever since 1947 I have been looking for a haunted house that is willing to take me on.

We loved that movie. Wouldn't mind seeing it again -- I must see if it's on YouTube. I remember they found a very clever way to mark the passage of time by showing the wear on a post by the harbour. The final scene was very poignant.

Somebody tried to make a series out of it but it flopped. It varied between disappointing and silly. And, of course, they couldn't come within reach of the original cast.

I was surprised, reading your answer, to learn that it was made as early as 1947. I first saw it much later than that -- perhaps as late as 1960 or so.

I ran across something fairly disturbing today. I'll email you.

Thanks for the answer.

I think I'd like to have a ghost around the house. You don't have to feed them, you don't have to take them for walks, and there are no vet bills. I wonder if anybody ever thought about setting up a ghost shop where we could buy them?

My family and I lived in a house that was built in 1701. Many people were born and died in that house throughout the years, but we never had ghostly visitors. I was surprised and looking forward to meeting some ghosts.

I would hear someone walking in the kitchen in the middle of the night in the last house we lived in. I asked my husband what he was doing in the kitchen the next morning, and he would tell me he wasn't. After that I would get up and check and no one was there. After we remodeled the kitchen I never heard it again. I hope whoever it was liked the remodel.

The idea of spirits, ghosts, spooks, specters etc has become part of our humanity for better or worse. Most folks I believe would favor such creatures because it would mean "a life after death" was possible. If they were a reality I would love to sit and chat with them. Imagine the stories, the factual accounts of history.

Practical idea. Wouldn't it be great to talk to the ghosts of Plato, or Lao Tsu, or Napoleon, or Washington and get their ideas first hand.

Living in the old house with 13 Ghosts might be kind of amusing. Especially with the cool glasses to see them.

I just chased that up through Cristian Girotto. He's done some amazing stuff, Rooster.

IF one believes that Christ was both divine and human and did indeed rise from the dead, the appearance of Him to the apostles in the upper room brings up the possibility that one of the characteristics of a resurrected body is the ability to pass through physical walls.

And that in turn opens up the possibility of another mode of existence for deceased but  "un-resurrected" humans.

And that leads to the possibility of a phenomenon which we do not yet fully understand but which is associated with "ghosts" and "hauntings."

So to answer your question(s):  Possibly, no, and no.

(Part of my reason for the second "no" is that I am not sure whether my dogs are my pets or I am theirs.)

I'm glad you're taking this question seriously, Tom. Introducing historical precedent is clever. If Jesus did actually leave the tomb via one of the walls then perhaps less imposing ghosties could do the same.

You've also introduced one of the great imponderables: do we own our pets or do they own us? Well, that depends on whether your pet is a dog or a cat. :(
