I had someone ask me something today that got me to thinking ... What do you realize more now that you are older, that you didn't when you were younger? Any comments?

How few people's opinions actually matter. When we are younger we worry so much about people opinions. We worry about what everyone thinks. As we get older we realize how little those people actually matter.

Personally .. I don't disagree .. but I have to comment further that I feel that some opinions 'matter' .. what doesn't matter to me is that we may have a difference of opinion .. Unless other's provide a compelling argument, it really doesn't change how I feel or the opinions I have formed by the information I have based my opinions on. I don't feel the need to 'follow' the flow as much as I used to.

I might also add to your splendid answer, Gator, that we come to know which opinions really do matter, few though such opinions are.

I remember one day in the grocery store some stranger told me the color of my shirt did not suit me. If they told me that in my teens I would have gone home and thrown out the shirt. I just looked at them and told them they were not my mother nor my husband so their opinion did not count. They should have been impressed I changed out of my yoga pants and brushed my hair.

Time. When younger I thought I had all kinds of time, as I've aged time has become more precious to me. Also time seemed to go slower when I was younger, now I blink and a year went by.

Myla and me are doing great. The weather here is a little wonky at the moment. We're normally in the 20-40F degree this time of year and today it was 61 degrees.

That's about 16 Celsius which is a typical winter day for us down here. It's a good temperature for dogs. Not too hot or cold. Does Myla like the snow?

She loves the snow. I got her when she was 3 months old and we had about 20 inches of snow on the ground. I had to dig a path in the front yard for her to go.

Touching on some of the other excellent responses, I have realized more how important it is to get on with the business of living.

-Live in the moment; don't dwell in the past, nor obsess over things you can't change.

-To be ABOUT something, to be of use or aid to your fellow man.

-To give cause to be well spoken of and fondly remembered.

1. Most people in high responsibility jobs, with titles etc, have no clue as to what they are doing.

2. At a person's funeral, people rarely care about how a persons looked or what job they did, but who that person was and how much their personality had an effect on them.

3. Vanity and fear just leads to self absorption and a lack of freedom, if you want to be free you need to be so absorbed in something where you are really enjoying it, or having so much fun that you don't care about anything else.

4. Most things in life can be dealt with using a good dose of laughter.

5. If you take life too seriously it really is going to be a long hard slog.

6. Best advice you can receive is off someone who identifies how bloody hard it is sometimes, and how fallible they are, it is that which bonds people.

7. Everyone needs a hug sometimes, or a listening ear without interruption or comment, especially off of someone who knows where they are at, because they've been there themselves.  Listening is an underestimated gift, and the world will never be full of "too much" empathy.
