With some restrictions, yes. Younger students who lived by the school, who could walk there and back in the allotted time. Also I think it should be a privilege for seniors in high school. Unfortunately where I live it became a legal liability issue and no one is allowed to leave anymore.

high school kids are allowed to do that in my area.. Without permission as well... Most high schools in my home city have a mcdonalds, chinese, pizza, or dairy queen within a block because they get good business during the school year... When i was in high school some of my friends and i would walk a couple of blocks and buy some snacks at lunch at a nearby plaza. sometimes i'd even go to  walmart at lunch..

there was a rule that once you leave the school grounds, you become liable for yourself.

Nowadays, kids don't normally go to school in their neighborhoods, so many don't have the option to run home and eat lunch and come back in a timely manner. As far as I understand it, they don't allow enough time to eat lunch anyway and have some recess time when they're through.

In any event, I think high school juniors and seniors should be allowed to leave campus for lunch.
