It can be shown rather easily that the processes of mind occur in the synaptic firings of the brain. There is no empirical evidence of a soul, as used in the spiritual context.
If the mind were the same as the brain, I don't think we would ever be caught in such a thing as a "dilemma."
My preferred paradigm is a body and a soul, with the intellect and the free will as properties of the soul.
