Does a person perceived to be a alcoholic have to go cold turkey for their rest of their life?

Yes.  Like any addict, they have to stay entirely away from the addictive item.    Just being in the same room can be enough temptation to destroy recovery. Certainly taking a drink would be too much for most addicts.  One drink and that feeling and tgen its 'one more wont hurt' then 'just one more isnt a big deal' then their will power to totally gone and so is all the hard work theyve done to recover.    Thats why AA has mentors - a mento to call when theres that temptation to just take one little drink, just one cant hurt right?  Only 99% of the time it does hurt.  One little drink leads fast to recovery being blown out if the water.

cold turkey---the abrupt and complete cessation of taking a drug to which one is addicted.

Hopefully only once.
