Nope. Military service isn't for everyone. Forcing the unwilling or unable into service has dreadful consequences on morale and mission.

Then there will always be those who, by virtue of family, wealth or political affiliation, will manage to be unfairly exempted.

While most people equate conscription with the draft, it is by definition service to the government. If we start putting some of the younger people to work in areas where they can see how the world, or at least their country, really is it may not be a bad thing. Have those who have been privileged see what it is like for those less fortunate by having them work in organizations that help them. Hopefully they will feel less entitled and my come up with ways to better help. Have those that have had a challenged life work with those who are doing better. It can give them something to aspire to.

Absolutely not. We had conscription in Oz during the 1950s (when i did my own national service) and later again during the Vietnam War.
