I don't see what the big hype is about Star Wars. What is it about the movies do people like?

For me personally it's been a life long affiliation. I saw the first movie in 6th grade. Before then Science fiction was represented in really boring, strange movies, but it was the 70's. Star Wars blew my mind, I had never seen anything like it. It had everything, duty, love, destiny, good vs bad, with the good winning out after a cool battle. I loved all three movies. Then they decided to go back and make another three. I was still patient even after renaming their order. Mostly because it was how everyone came to be. It finally answered my questions.

With the new three, I have zero interest in. I think I'm afraid that it won't live up to my expectations. I feel like with the first six that's enough. I don't want to know any more.

You have a good point my friend. That definitely makes since. I have fond memories of my dad and my sister playing super Mario bros and eating grapes. Lol! Grapes are good but never the same as when you eat them with the tune of Luigi eating a mushroom and getting bigger! Lol!

What I found interesting for this next "Round of Star Wars Movies" is how close it was to the first Star Wars. It was almost like JJ Abrahms (love his work), is walking very cautiously on a very thinly iced "Fan Acceptance probation" . . . . . . It reprised several character ROLES, as well as paying tribute while saying good bye to several characters.
I am mostly interested in these next movies only due to JJ Abrahms other triumphs regarding Star Trek.

I say JJ Abrahms was a failure at StarTrek.
All he did was rehash older movie plots, with a modest amount of script changes ... and explain them by creating an alternate time line.

Yin, I get your question 100%.

So here is my take on why it means so much to some people.

For some, it was a milestone in their life, usually regarding an age, where this sudden explosion of incredible "Special Effects" marked a major milestone in their childhood. It had such an impact, that the movie stayed in theaters longer then most other movies had, and the sequels were the first have the term "Blockbuster" associated with movies. People were lining up along the streets to wait for the next showing. Lucas was a big deal, he literally came from nothing and broke into an all "Old School" industry, that had been reserved for those that were already making movies in Hollywood. Spielberg, Coppola  . . . Etc. Were amongst others that would sit in Lucas's living room to review the first Star Wars and give critical advice to their friend. Even though Star Trek had been canceled it retained it's cult following of people hungry for good Science Fiction and we were looking towards "Space Exploration" in a different way . . . Star Wars added to this already growing excitement. As Star Wars enthusiasts grew up got married and had their own kids, they made it a special time to introduce their (our) kids to something that had been so special to us. My two boys watched the movie several times wearing out the VHS tapes they were on. This was a perfect time for "Lucas Arts" to produce video games for several gaming console platforms, which ingrained Star Wars even more into our pop culture . . .

It is pretty much all that for most people.

The first movie set the stage and thrust a whole generstion into a new realm. The technology used in the special effects then was totally new and as furtureistic as the movie, relastively speaking. The following movies continued the saga. Unfortunately for the franchise the newer movies do not have the apeal nor the "wonder" as the original ones. I always enjoyed a good sci fi movie. I am "time traveling" fan, so Dr. Who (even the bad ones) has always apealed to me.

Thank you my friend. I am starting to see why it caught the attention of people. You all are so kind to help me see through your eyes. I guess I was always more into the medical dramas/movies. I got caught up in the George Clooney ER series! Lol! And my ex step dad was a total "trekie" so I was stuck hearing every episode of star trek every time it was on! Lololoolololol! The only ones that caught my attention was the strange medical episodes or of course Beverly Crusher!

I'm a real space cadet and always have been. I LOVED the first three that came out but was highly disappointed in the movies that followed. I think it was the special effects that grabbed me and sucked me into the Star Wars fanaticism.

I don't like it either. But I suppose every generation has its own "thing" that has a massive effect on culture/entertainment. Maybe the same effect Harry Potter series had on my generation.

Empire strikes back

Return of the Jedi

Are the only movies I recognize, fantastic in every way, when animation was limited and they used puppets and models to create a fantastic world realistic in every way .

Today they use computers to animate , not the same .
