I think it's a little premature, we have just begun to man a space station. That would be like creating the US Air Force in the year 1859 instead of 1947 when we actually had airplanes.
I just glanced at a small news report claiming Congress is looking to establish a new Military Branch called the US Space Corps. What is your opinion?
As if there weren't already enough ways in which American military spending is bloated...
Sounds like a covert little expense fund to write off waste and fund needless, exhorbitant pie-in-the-sky projects that benefit only rich Corporations, but cost everyone, while our bridges rot, schools deteriorate and civil water systems fail.
No doubt the entire idea was hatched at the behest of the cabal of fatcat Defense Contractors, who contribute so generously to political campaigns.
Realistically, waiting for THIS pitiful Congress to agree to establish anything, particularly a space corps, is likely to take just long enough for actual aliens to arrive and take their seats.
I for one hope so.
Personally, I see no reason for the current four branches of the military.
It's not like the Navy, Army, and Marines don't have their own air power. Or the Marines don't have their own naval vessels. Or any branch doesn't have it's own land-based capabilities.
I say they should be combined into one branch ... Which would allow cutting a lot of brass weight.
I would have to hear/read more about it before making any opinion on the subject. For what it is worth, more than half of our astronauts have a military background. And the military has always been a big part of our space program. It may be a way to get more funding to our space program.
Money needs to be spent on trying to make America better...
