When writing a sick leave letter application to a principle, you should use a standard letter format.

(Most of these recommendations also apply if you are writing a leave application for school for any other reason)
Your aim will be to advise the Principal of an absence due to illness, and request his/her approval of this sick leave.

Here are some details you must include in your sick leave application letter:

  1. The date you are writing
  2. Name of Principal
  3. Name of School
  4. Address of School
  5. Salutation:  "Dear Sir (or Madam):
  6. Re:  Student’s name, then grade or class name
  7. Your request, and the explanation for it.
  8. If you wish, a suggestion about the missed class work.
  9. Contact information in case the principal needs to talk to you.
  10. Your thanks for his/her attention to your request.
  11. Your signature
The following sample will give you an idea of how this will look:

02 May 2011 (change date as appropriate)

Mr./Ms./Mrs. ____ , Principal

School Name
School Address

Dear Sir/Madam:

Re:  (Name of Student), Grade (?) or Class (?)

I am writing to inform you that my son (student’s name) is ill and will not be able to attend school for (number of days).  Please grant him leave from classes for this period of time while he recovers.

If we need to make arrangements for homework to cover the work he will miss during this time, you can contact me at (telephone number) and I would be pleased to discuss this with you.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

(Your name)

This should be all the information you need to provide.  The inclusion of your telephone number is an extra courtesy and will ensure that the school principal can reach you if there is any need to discuss your application for sick leave or any other issues concerning your child.

My ward abcd is unable to present to the class from 11th April 2010 and will not be able to come back until the end of June 2010.

This is because she is in India with her mother to look after her grandmother, who is not well. So I request to your kind office to grant her leave for the aforementioned absence days.

Follow company policy - email may not be the best method.

Call the company and leave a voice mail message, or contact supervisor on telephone directly.  If you send an email it may not be read in time, and it will be considered a 'no call, no show'.

Hope this helps! G.
