An acid is a chemical substance which gives protons in its solution. The molecular formula for acetic acid is CH3COOH. Acetic acid is colorless organic compound and also known as ethanoic acid. Acetic acid is a weak acid and when dissolve in water gives a proton or hydrogen ion.

CH3COOH ------> CH3COO-1 + H+1

The equation for the reaction is;

CH3COOH + H2O ------> CH3COO-1 + H3O+1

When acetic acid is added to water, acetate ion CH3COO-1 and hydronium ion H3O+1 are formed.
