Mixing units
It is important to note that a teaspoon (tsp.) is a unit of volume, whereas a gram is a unit of weight. (Scientists would say it's a unit of mass, but I digress.) So, perhaps a better way of phrasing the question might be, "Expressed in grams, how much does a teaspoon of sugar weigh?"

From what I figure, a teaspoon of sugar weighs about 4 grams. I say "about" because I based my calculation on the fact that a cup of sugar weighs "about" 7 ounces. (That's 7 DRY ounces.) A cup also contains 8 fluid ounces, and an ounce is 2 tablespoons. A tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons, so there are 48 teaspoons to the cup. Not done yet. So, 48 teaspoons of sugar weigh about 7 ounces, which means that a teaspoon of sugar weighs about 0.14 dry ounce. And 0.14 ounce is equivalent to 3.96 grams, which rounds to 4 grams.

So, one teaspoon of sugar weighs about 4 grams. Therefore, 9 teaspoons of sugar weighs about 36 grams.
