What Is A 3D Printer?

 3 years ago - 1 answer

Cian
A 3d-Printer is a miniature manufacturing facility, similar in scale to a microwave oven, which can be used to produce actual objects based on an input design. The objects produced can be of almost any three dimensional shape and constitute a kind of simple sculpture.

The material of which the "printed" objects are produced is generally simple and unvariegated - plastic is common.

3D printers exist now and are used by architects and manufacturing companies to try out designs, and by educational establishments involved in teaching design. Their high price tends to limit the potential market reach of the product, however.

Some believe that 3D-printers will plummet in cost soon and may become common household items. Although the single material constraint limits the printer to producing  read more...

Do Eyelashes Grow?

asked by Hodge  3 years ago - 5 answers

Scavenger
Yes, they do grow. You can lose your eyelashes completely (in an accident) and they will grow back within 1-2 months.
pasukaru76
But like the rest of the hair on our bodies they have their own internal preset length at which they start falling out. So they grow so long, fall out, and then new ones grow. That's why some people can't grow long hair on their heads, and why some folk have long eyelashes and others only get short stubby eyelashes. Relatively long eyelashes would be about 2cm long, relatively short ones might only be 5-7 mm or so.

Interestingly, people with certain congenital and nervous system abnormalities seem most likely to have the longest eye lashes; mothers of autistic children often comment on this aspect of their children's eyes. Nobody knows why this should be.  read more...

How Do You Know What Running Shoes To Buy?

 4 months ago - 2 answers

Guinevere
Everyone has different body types and foot shapes so there isn’t one best shoe to buy that will suit everyone. However, it is possible to determine what type of shoe will fit you best by taking a quick look at the shape of your feet. Other things to consider are where you run (on pavement or pebbles or grass) and how much you weigh.

The best thing to do first is a wet footprint test. Put a piece of paper down on the floor and step on it with a wet foot. A ‘normal’ foot with a normal arch will leave a wet footprint that shows the forefoot and heal connected by a broad band. A ‘flat’ foot is one with a low arch and will show a wet print that looks like the entire sole of a foot. A high-arched foot will leave a print showing a very narrow or no band between the heel and forefoot.  read more...

What Is Mass Hysteria?

 4 months ago - 2 answers

Limpl0uie
Mass hysteria sounds like a phrase that doesn’t actually mean anything. Today, we normally use it in the hyperbolic sense. “Everyone is freaking out over these Tickle me Elmos! It’s mass hysteria!” But, this phrase that we just kind of casually throw around is actually has some substance behind it. As it turns out, there are a bunch of actual cases of mass hysteria; cases where large groups of people suddenly, and whole heartedly, believed something to be true; to be real. Sometimes it’s silly, sometimes it’s a bit on the serious side, but when mass hysteria strikes, it’s always guaranteed be an absolute mystery.
