The potential existence of life forms on other planets and the possibility that these celestial visitors might just pay us all a visit here on Earth has fascinated people across the world for generations and led to numerous works of science fiction. While many scientists have pointed to evidence which suggests the existence of basic life forms on other planets—such as traces of water—it has not been possible to prove personal testimonies and recordings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). The problem for ufologists is that while they may have circumstantial evidence for the existence of UFOs and aliens, they would need what is known as “direct evidence” to bolster their case. Despite dozens of alleged UFO sightings during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries—many of which  read more...

The majority of teeth grinding occurs while asleep; this is known as bruxism. While most cases of bruxism aren't particularly dangerous, excessive grinding can lead to jaw ache, headaches and chipped or lost teeth. There are many potential causes of bruxism, including, stress, drug use and discrepancies between the shape and size of the top and bottom sets of teeth. Are Frozen Frogs The Key To Cryogenics?

The wood frog hibernates at temperatures of around 26 degrees Fahrenheit (-3.3 degrees Celsius). Their bodies are cold and stiff, seemingly frozen solid, but in the spring, they thaw and come back to life with no harm done. Other animals can perform similar feats, but how is it done, and could it hold the key to making cryogenics viable? The wood frog hibernates at temperatures of around -3.3 degrees Celsius. Picture source: flickr.com The wood frog's hibernation ability is so impressive because in most organisms, when exposed to freezing temperatures for a prolonged period, the water in cells freezes, and cells are ravaged by the resultant ice crystals. But in wood frogs, the animal's metabolism plummets and cells empty of some of their water as glucose floods in. The high levels of glucose  read more...

The Berlin Candy Bomber was an affectionate title given to American pilot Gail Halvorsen, who dropped candies and chewing gum while flying over Berlin, Germany, in his military aircraft, during the Allied Airlift of 1948-49. Known as Operation Vittles, the Berlin Airlift was a period during which the British and the Americans transported 4,000 tons of food and emergency supplies per day, to a city which was surrounded by hostile Soviet forces and which faced the imminent threat of starvation. Halvorsen, who was only 28 years old at the time, turned into a hero in the eyes of hundreds of German children who would wait for candy to drop from the sky on tiny parachutes, as the candy bomber flew over Germany’scapital city. Will we soon be extinct?  Are we now, 10,000 years into the Holocene Epoch, experiencing another mass extinction event that few of us have bothered notice?   Is extinction a natural process of evolution; a means of natural selection – only the fittest survive as Charles Darwin suggested?  If so, will mankind prove to be the fittest and survive indefinitely?  Or, as the clergyman, Thomas Malthus, proposed in regard to the human race, survival is dependent simply upon resources.  Once resources decline, humans survive only because natural forces limit growth by disease and starvation.    Perhaps Anaximander, an early Greek philosopher born in 610 BC and considered by some to be the first true scientist, was correct and  read more...
