There are 4 stages of the oestrus cycle of the dog. Proestrus lasts 5-9 days. This is when the reproductive tract is preparing for fertilisation. The female will be attractive to male dogs, but she will not receive them, and may become aggressive towards them. The vulva will swell and there may be a straw to blood coloured discharge from the vulva. The next stage is Oestrus, or Standing Heat. This is when the female will allow males to mount her. It lasts 6-12 days. She will show a behaviour called flagging. This is where she raises her hindquarters and moves her tail to the side. The next stage is Dioestrus (2-3 months) where she will again not allow males to mount her. This is followed by Anoestrus where she is out of heat for 3-10 months.
