I am 50-50 on this one.
Most People in Japan are usually very nice, welcoming, polite, friendly & tolerant.
But, some culturally strict people are a bit racist but never heard of any Japanese as violent & they deserve applause for that.
Love you people.

I think so. A great majority of Japanese people are incredibly kind. Many say "good morning" and and have a smile. I could say that They are the most benignant people in the world.

I have always thought that Japan was the most, if not THE most civilized country in the world.

I have never been to Japan or really much anywhere out of the U.S. But the Japanese do have a reputation of being very polite. In their culture one of the major things is to be respectful to people, especially adults.

I haven't been to all the nations in the world, nor even met individuals from all the nations in the world. That said, the Japanese culture seems to have created one of the most polite societies I have encountered, and it is greatly reflected in their current customs and people.

I agree. I have had many Japanese friends and I have experienced this first hand. They are fun, too.

My father went on business to Japan. The person who met him took him for a coffee and when my dad said "what about my luggage?" was told, O just leave it here. (On the floor in the middle of the railway station). Dad said, won't it be stolen? _ No. And it was still there when they returned.
In Uk it would either have been stolen, or blown up in a controlled explosion by the bomb control guys!

Not even a debate. I have been to Japan. If I'm lucky, someday I'll live there.

I really couldn't say from experience.. But I can say it is possible to be both polite and patronizing.. The few I have met seem very nice and polite. Quiet and rather shy. But I believe the Old ways had women and people of lower station to be rather submissive. It is hard to say really w/out actually visiting there.

Japanese are very polite people. But they can be quite racist against outsiders (gaijins).

You have your good and bad in every race..did you meet every single person there????? If so, then I'm wrong and all i gotta say is"wow!"

The Japanese, as a people, are very racist. They treat races they feel are inferior to them with impatience and contempt. Just ask the Chinese, Philippino, Chamorro (Guamanian). Good food, though.

I would not call it "polite", but rather the most "tolerant and appeasing" country in the world. They have a lot of formality, and follow this prescribed 'ways of doing things'. They pay attention to detail because it's expected. This does not translate into the person's individual feelings. Also, depending on what you are trying to do or say, Japanese can be very rude (by western terms), when it comes to racism and sexism.

By the time I realize I voted against this, it was already here. I am definitely for it. I have many Japanese friends who have invited me to diner and their families are so nice and polite.
