Most Laws Are Absolutely Pointless

Do You Think That Most Laws Are Absolutely Pointless. With The Exception Of Some Transportation Laws, Laws Absolutely Pointless? Think About It, If A Criminal Is Going To Do Something Do You Think That Theyre Going To Stop And Say Wait Its Against The Law Im Not Going To Do That? A Good Example Is The Ban That Some States Have Against Fireworks. All That It Does Is Stop People From Doing Something That They Enjoy, Just Because A Few People Don't Like It. There Are Hundreds More Examples But The Word Limit Prevents Me From Listing Them.

We do have entirely too many laws. There should be no laws for victimless crimes. There should be no laws other than those which prevent us from infringing upon the liberties and rights of others.

Every law passed chips away our freedom just a little bit more. Last year alone, over 58,000 pages of new laws were entered into the Federal Register. Do you know what they all are? Nobody does.

I am in agreement that we have a lot of laws out in force that are pointless.

There are hundreds of pointless laws clogging up the books, for example, "It is unlawful, in the State of Tennessee, to catch a fish using a lasso." But so many more are USEFUL! Murder, burglary, and rape laws are going to stop some people.

I never thought of it that way. Yea, now that I think about it, most laws do sound stupid and restraining.

Law are designed to create order, both in the universe and in society. The fact that some people break the law does not make the law bad and those people good :). Laws are made to be obeyed and to create order and safety, both for the individual and for society.

The thing is murders and stuff don't care about the law, but many honest and noble people do. They won't do something because they know it is against the law and they know they are failing their country, so all laws have a point. It is just some points are harder to find than others!

The laws are not pointless. You have to abide by them or suffer the consequences. Being informed about the laws and consequences of breaking them does keep some people from breaking them. All laws may not be fair to all people, but we have to abide by them until changes can be made.

I would say some but not all laws are pointless. Especially the antiquated laws that need to be gotten rid of.

Laws are only pointless if they are not enforced equally for all people..

When someone is going to rob a house, umm... Yeah, they might give it a second thought if there's a possibility of getting put away for a few years. :)

When you post a debate, just post it. Don't ask questions and don't give your opinion.

Without laws we'd have an anarchy. The problem isn't pointless laws, and there are many that are outdated that should be removed from the books, it's the inability to enforce them without enough law enforcement personnel.

The fireworks example is particularly flawed. Fireworks can't be purchased legally in states where they are illegal. If they weren't illegal, the number of personal injuries would multply (www.cdc.com), and accidents and damages would skyrocket. I love fireworks, but I don't want to be injured and I don't want to see anyone else hurt.

Your example of criminals doing something to someone is also flawed. The kinds of laws I think you are referring to are hardly pointless. Without them there would be chaos. Believe or not some of them do make people think twice before committing a crime.

The biggest problem with your reasoning is that without laws, violators couldn't be punished. People could amok doing whatever they liked if there were no consequences. Most laws exist for our protection.

I will grant you that there are some pointless laws that can't be enforced or that were passed with a limited population in mind (the case of Terry Scihavo).

Laws are supposed to be restraining. They are supposed to restrain us from doing things that are detrimental to society, and they provide a remedy for those violations.

Laws are necessary in any civilized society. Of course there are meaningless laws that don't make sense and do not benefit anyone. But, the majority of our laws protect the general population in some form.
