Without laws we'd have an anarchy.
The problem isn't pointless laws,
and there are many that are
outdated that should be removed
from the books, it's the inability
to enforce them without enough law
enforcement personnel.
The fireworks example is
particularly flawed. Fireworks
can't be purchased legally in
states where they are illegal. If
they weren't illegal, the number of
personal injuries would multply
(www.cdc.com), and accidents and
damages would skyrocket. I love
fireworks, but I don't want to be
injured and I don't want to see
anyone else hurt.
Your example of criminals doing
something to someone is also
flawed. The kinds of laws I think
you are referring to are hardly
pointless. Without them there
would be chaos. Believe or not
some of them do make people think
twice before committing a crime.
The biggest problem with your
reasoning is that without laws,
violators couldn't be punished.
People could amok doing whatever
they liked if there were no
consequences. Most laws exist for
our protection.
I will grant you that there are
some pointless laws that can't be
enforced or that were passed with a
limited population in mind (the
case of Terry Scihavo).
Laws are supposed to be
restraining. They are supposed to
restrain us from doing things that
are detrimental to society, and
they provide a remedy for those
violations.
