While I agree that Wal-Mart is a
menace, a store cannot be
"discontinued".
Their business practices are
shameful. Their employees aren't
paid enough for them to make ends
meet. They classify employees as
part-time by having them work just
under 40 hours. That way they
don't have to offer them things
like group health insurance.
Wal-Mart discriminates against
women by denying them managerial
positions. They have cheated
employees out of overtime pay and
have been sued for millions (and
lost) because of that. They have
been known to hire illegal aliens
and locking them in the store
overnight.
Wal-Mart has been known to destroy
local businesses because those
businesses can't compete. They
have also been guilty of polluting
a water supply in North Carolina, I
believe. They left palletes of
chemical fertilizer in the parking
lot, and when it rained, the
packages broke and the chemicals
flowed into a local river.
There's a lot more, and local
communities have protested and, in
some cases, have been successful in
preventing Wal-Mart from opening
stores in those communities.
Wal-Mart outsources as we already
know. They pay low wages to the
factory workers. In China Wal-Mart
provides (a generous word)
dormitories for the factory
workers, but they charge them rent
and utilities. If a worker chooses
not to live in a dorm, the company
still deducts the cost of rent from
their salaries. They don't deduct
for the utilities, How kind of
them.
Did you know that the Waltons are
billionaires, yet their employees
contribute more to charity that the
company does? Their employees
contribute to see that fellow
employees are taken care of in
times of need. The Waltons give
nothing, nada, zero, zilch! This
is an interesting example.
