One of the greatest freedoms of writing/ free verse and creativity involves an exercise of free association whereby the poet writes a poem that progressively uses the alphabet in order. A poem is written so that every word beigns with the next letter of the alphabet. Writers are encouraged not to think too much on making sense, but writing what comes to mind. Generally this free association is stream of consciousness writing and can reveal some underlying frame of mind, leading to mor expansive revisions. Often I cannot use the entire alphabet (X and Z are stifling!!) but you may find it amazing how auickly the words arise in your mind and present a thought or message to you. I love this exercise when I don't particularly feel like writing but know I need to to get centered again.
I hope you enjoy this exercise on your own.
Here is an example of free association poetry writing:
Ardent Bells Chime, Dinging...
Ever fluid, great halls in Justice, Knowledge Lifting
Myself--New.
Over Peals Quite Resonant,
Soothing, (the) Talisman Urges VIctories.
Wistfulness.
