I am looking for my first horse and most people say that thoroughbreds are a bad first time horse. What do you think? |

I agree that a TB is a bad horse for a beginner. Most TBs are excitable and can sometimes be unpredictable. While every breed is going to have a naysayer, it is better to look at what you are wanting to do with the horse versus a particular breed. For example, if you eventually want to get into jumping or 3day eventing, you might want to go with a cross. Arab/Quarter crosses are really good for this. Straight Arabs another one I'd stay away from for a beginner. While they are good horses, they can be high strung.
Another thing that matters is your age and height. If you are still young, maybe a pony breed would be a better start. If you are tall, then maybe a cross such as Walker/Quarter, Walker/TB, Saddlebred/Quarter, Belgium/Saddlebred, etc.
The most important thing is what you want to do with the horse. Another option might be to lease a horse for 6 months to make sure this is something you're really committed to. It also gives you the chance to possibly try different mounts before you buy. Lessons would be another good way to suit a horse to your skills/needs. Many stables can also recommend horses that will match you. |
