10/31/07:
The star rating in debate was introduced in early August, according to "Featured" and "Stephen" (Blurtit Staff), so users could rate the quality (reasoning/support) of a debate answer, not to express one's personal agreement with a viewpoint/answer. Nor was it intended as a way for people to just gain points. Nor was it intended as a way to punish another Blurter because you happen to be upset with them for one reason or another. The star rating system in debate has proven only to be a source of contention among Blurters, and because it is ineffective because it is inconsistently applied (some use it to agree with a view, others use it to rate the reasoning, others use it to gain points, others use it (childishly) to try to "punish" or embarrass fellow blurters). It does not accomplish the stated purpose/reason for introduction and only creates bad feelings among users.
BLURTIT: Please consider removing the star rating system from the debate forum. The quality of the answers has decreased significantly since introducing the system. New Blurters seem to see it more like an opinion poll with the little star ratings attached. Take a look at debate forum-- you will see this rating systm has failed to do anything but create bad feelings, and it's time to make corrections.
(Update 10/13/07) I encourage all to take a look at the quality of debate responses from early August vs. Currently. Looks like many people now are just offering a one sentence opinion that will draw a star rating. How silly. Unbelievably, others are using the rating system to "get back" at a fellow blurter for something that was said as a way to or gain a point for each rating they give someone else. Blurtit--are you listening and observing this? Get rid of this silly star rating system in debate! Clearly it was a bad idea and is affecting the forum adversely!
(Udate 9/26/07: It certainly IS affecting the quality of the answers in debates --adversely--and the friendliness of the forum, as well!)
(8/10/07)Yes, but “great” in terms of what? I think too often "great" is defined by whether one agrees or not with a viewpoint, rather than on the content of the argument/answer. We already can see both level of agreement AND commentary on the quality of an answer via the "comments" feature, and we get much richer information this way.
And so far, looking at the debate pages, a 5-star rating does not push a given answer to the "top". (And do people really care whose answer is at the top? I know I don't. (I just don't see how important that would be, or to whom that would be important.)

This one has been a contentious issue on the site for a while, so we have made the decision to remove the ratings from the debates. We will continue to monitor this as time goes on and see how it effects things. I am open to any suggestions on how we could improve the way debates work in future so please continue to provide your feedback.

You've taken away our Smiley fun! Now your taking away another thing that makes us individual and different from other's! Also you've removed more enjoyment and fun in reading the answers of others and being able to see how others liked that reply! You know I'm very smart so I solved ALL YOU PROBLEMS with your forcing the British Vocabulary on us Americans with our own Dialect! ALL you have to do is make a FOR or Against set of boxes and we simply check them! Now that solves the whole problem!

If you are trying to destroy a super site your definitively on the right path! I would compare it to shotting your self in the foot so you'll get new shoes! The solutions are staring you in the face adad1122, and it is very simple too, Cuz! YOU MAKE A DEBATE and post it on the home page with those boxes! Now that is Democratic, CUZ! NO AMERICANS ARE ON YOUR STAFF. Now that is not Democratic, Cuz!

I agree with logic about making for and against boxes in the debate groups so we can simply check them. People would feel more like being part of the debate group with some sort of rating system. And, when there is something to be voted on, can we "blurters" be part of the voting process so that is more of a democratic process instead of "here's what we're doing"...

Adad1122 by your rules first you only get points onyour post 10 points, and some debates are fun only debates, now you remove the fun! I've got so many pionts and at the maxxed level, so the point don'even matter any more for this is the highest level Where the problem started was very simple! I'm being checked for Cancer and needed an excape from my own mind and get away from that extream pressure of the BIG C! My next appoinment is the 5th!

Logic, you typed "Also you've removed more enjoyment and fun in reading the answers of others and being able to see how others liked that reply!"
They haven't taken away the comments section/ability to comment on someone's anwer in debate. You can see how others like your answer by reading the comments they leave. Right?

And weren't you complaining / concerned that certain users were misuing the star rating system and affecting your "poor, average-good-great" answer quality rating on your home page by giving you bad ratings on your bedate answers?
It does appear people were just abusing the star rating system in debate.

Boxes was a joke for that would remove ALL our separate identities!
However on a front page debate that might be a very good ideal!
A FRONT page one week Debate IS ALL I'm asking, JOHN!

Hi Logic,
Sorry i have not got back to you sooner.
I appreciate that your passionate about Blurtit and value your opinion because of that. We just felt that overall the ratings system was not representative of the arguments in the debates. I would also say there was a busy debate on this subject, and although the result was close it did highlight the issues with the system.
At this time we have no plans to reinstate or reinvent the ratings system.

John their is little value to the Debates as to solving World problems, BUT what is in question is the FUN FACTOR and ENJOYMENT of Blurtit and THIS is what is giving Blurtit the Fast growth that means advertising and more growth! If ANYONE feels that we are solving World problems here then have pity on them! It's enjoyment and the fun! This is what you are you removing, CUZ!
