A Dam Needs A Supporting Beam. The Dam Leans At An 80 Degree Angle And Is 200ft Tall. If The Base Of The Supporting Beam Is Placed 75ft From The Base Of The Dam And The Beam Extends To The Top Of The Dam, How Long Must The Beam Be?

Suppose we label the points as follow: A = top of the dam where the beam joins it B = the base of the dam C = the base of the supporting beam.Based on your description, there are a couple of possibilities1. Angle ABC is 80°2. Angle ABC is the supplement of 80°In any event, side b (opposite angle B) is given by b2 = a2 + c2 - 2acCos[ABC] (law of cosines)Case 1 - ABC is acute b2 = 752 + 2002 - 2(75)(200)Cos[80°] ≈ 5625 + 40000 - 30000(.17365) ≈ 45625 - 5209.45 ≈ 40415.55 b = √40415.55 ≈ 201.04Case 2 - ABC is obtuse b2 = 752 + 2002 - 2(75)(200)Cos[100°] ≈ 5625 + 40000 - 30000(-.17365) ≈ 45625 + 5209.45 ≈ 50834.45 b = √50834.45 ≈ 225.46If the triangle formed by the dam and the beam is an obtuse ...more

Which Force Will Be Greater To Keep The Beam At Its Horizontal Position? A Force Applied Vertically At A Point Along The Beam Or A Force Inclined At Certain Angle From The Horizontal? Defend It

Asked by Guest in Physics 2 years ago - 2 answers

Obviously the force applied vertically would be greater. Because the weight of the beam is directed towards downward direction. If we apply the force vertically, it will balance or minimize the gravitational force, moreover, force will be applied vertically on all the portions of the beam for support and balancing. ...more
