The term Baroque was originally a term describing jewellery but it was extended to include architectural and other designs. The style was highly ornate, bordering on the grotesque. It was seen in the 16th and 17th centuries particularly in France. The word may have derived from the Spanish 'barrueco' or irregular pearl.
