Before traveling to any country it is always better to take the usual vaccines for protection against diseases like tetanus, polio hepatitis A and typhus, immunization today being a part and parcel of your travel insurance. Another highly recommended vaccine would be a prophylaxis against salmonella infections as stomach ailments are the commonest sort of afflictions in tropical countries.
Please ensure that you take the vaccines well in advance for optimum protection, ideally a month before you leave as most vaccines are to be taken in the form of courses and also as they take time to fortify your Immune System. Also the vaccines that you will need depend on the places that you intend to visit as also your age; for example in Indonesia if you are a tourist visiting the resorts at Bali you may not need a malaria prophylaxis as it is not a malaria zone. Discuss about what you might need with your family doctor or if needed one can even seek the advice of a specialist in Travel Medicine.
If you are going to Indonesia in relation to your profession and if you intend to visit the main islands then it would be better to take some extra precautions. Cases of Dengue fever and Avian Flu are not uncommon in Indonesia and as vaccines for both these diseases are not yet available safety measures like mosquito repellants, long sleeved shirts and trousers and mosquito nets are a necessity. The Tami flu medication as an adjunct with the influenza vaccine helps in the treatment as well as prevention of Avian Flu.
With regard to food it would be advisable to choose only well cooked dishes and avoid raw or partially cooked ones. Hygiene is the best vaccine against a number of diseases and as such it would be better to watch what you eat, drink and wear.
