How Long Is The River Nile?

The river Nile, the longest river in the world is 6,695 km (4,160 miles); it rises in Central Africa in Rwanda though the origin point is contested and flows northwards emptying in to the Mediterranean Sea. The main tributaries of the river are the Blue Nile and the White Nile; the White Nile (3700 km) which is longer than the Blue Nile (1600 km) rises in central Africa with Rwanda believed as its most southerly point.

The White Nile then flows through Tanzania, Lake Victoria and Uganda and meets the Blue Nile which originates from Lake Tana in Ethiopia, near Khartoum in Sudan. The river then flows through Egypt where the river's annual flooding which deposited fertile soil in the Egyptian plains had led to the establishment of the Egyptian civilization before draining in to the Mediterranean.

The important cities situated along the Nile are Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, Aswan, where the Aswan High Dam has been built, Luxor, the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes and Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
