David Baltimore and Howard Temin independently discovered an enzyme that synthesizes DNA from RNA., the reverse of the usual process. This enzyme, reverse transcriptase, has become an invaluable tool in recombinant-DNA technology today. David Baltimore's extensive research has helped illuminate the role of viruses in cancer; and for this, he shared a Nobel Prize in 1975 with Howard Temin.
In addition to his work with DNA and RNA, David Baltimore also served as president of Rockefeller University from 1990 until 1997 and later as the president of Caltech from 1997 until the present.
