Many do, but others will not. Some are aware, and others are only residual, meaning that they don't know that they are repeating the same things over and over. Yes, ghosts do hang around. My sister and I have had experiences with ghosts ever since we were little, so I've made it my business to help answer ghost questions. Whether it's an animal or a human, ghosts hang around for multiple reasons. Some because of unfinished business, like they were murdered; others because they do not realize or refuse to realize that they are dead. I have recently moved to a house with my family, and the home is over a hundred years old. My sister's room gets the ghosts. She's reported to me: A soldier, an unknown animal presence(it jumps onto her bed and sleeps at her feet and we have no animals), and a glowing presence in the room across the hall(it has no windows).
