Is Chippenham A Saxon Town?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Chippenham is believed to have been found by the Saxons. This was around 600 BC. Saxons are part of the German people who settled in places like German States of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, the northern part of North-Rhine-Westphalia and the northeastern part of the Netherlands. This word is derived from the term seax, which means single edge knives. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle, referred this town as Cippanhamme, or Cheppeham, which was also known as Saxon for trading and a market.

Subsequently, in the 878 this town was beleaguered by Danish Vikings. Later the Danelaw came in to rule, when the Dane surrendered at the Battle of Edington.

Chippenham comprises of Sheldon, which is a deserted medivial village. Today, however, there are remains of the Sheldon Manor.
