An engagement ring is just a token to mark the journey you two plan to take together. So anything that has some significance will do. If she is unhappy at not getting an expensive diamond ring to show off to her friends, or to measure your love with, then you should take a harder look at the relationship. Marriage is a joining of two people, of creating and sharing a new life together. It is not one party paying for a service, or purchasing some property. Save the unnecessary expense and invest it to build that life together.

When you marry the whole family i guess the stone size matters, but when you marry just her, get what you can pay for.
Yea, get what you can pay for and upgrade later; cause you only marry her, but when her family and friends see it, they will tell her what they think about it. If they give her a bad report, it will discourage her, and somewhere down the line you'll be buying a better one!
