    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a British physician and novelist known for his detective stories featuring unforgettable Sherlock Holmes.
    He was born in 1859 and studied at the University of Edinburgh. After completing his education, he started practising medicine in South sea, England. He was a writer who had a passion for writing detective stories. The first of 60 stories featuring Sherlock Holmes titled 'A Study in Scarlet' came out in 1887.  Holmes's inventive reasoning was based on one of Doyle's own university professors. Equally brilliant characters were Holmes's friend Dr. Watson and the master criminal Professor Moriarty. So successful was Conan Doyle in his literary career that he abandoned his medical practice to devote his entire time to writing.
    Some of the famous Holmes stories are The Sign of Four. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and His Last Bow. Conan Doyle's was a versatile writer and his historical romances such as Micah Clarke (1888), The White Company (1890), Rodney Stone (1896), and Sir Nigel (1906), and his play A Story of Waterloo (1894) also brought him fame.
    Doyle served as a physician in the Boer War and on his return he wrote about reasons for England's participation. He was knighted in 1902. Doyle died in 1930.
