What Is A Fictional Crossover?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A fictional crossover is where characters or settings from a novel are included in another novel. Characters from one book will interact with characters in another book.

Crossovers are widely used in fanfiction. For example, a fan may write a crossover between Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, which would involve characters from Harry Potter interacting with characters from The Lord of the Rings, and both sets of characters being placed in settings from either book.

Often, if an author has two separate books, they will include characters from one book in the other one. Comic books also include a fair amount of crossovers.

Television programmes also have crossovers. For example, The Simpsons and Futurama were once crossed over, both having been created by Matt Groening.

Crossovers are only official if they are created by the same owner. If crossovers are created by a person who is not the original owner of one of the novels, television programme, comic etc, then copyright issues will arise, although fanfiction crossovers are usually excused.
