Originally called battledore and shuttlecock, it was played by the ancient Chinese, and spread across Asia. It was brought back from India by the colonial British, principally the Duke of Beauford at his estate in Gloucestershire, the estate being known as Badminton House - also now famous for equestrian eventing.
