What Were Some Of The Slave Rebellions That Took Place In The United States Prior To The Civil War?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The intensifying talk about the issue of slavery in the United States prior to the Civil War and the movements that talked against slavery contributed a great deal towards motivating many slaves towards contemplating over the possibility and probability of freedom, which was nothing but a far-fetched fantasy for them, something that only remained a chimera of their imagination a few years ago.  Nevertheless the growing rift between the Northern and Southern states definitely played a great role in encouraging some slaves to take some action for attaining freedom.  This resulted in many slave rebellions.

One of these rebellions was arranged, organized and led by an enslaved African American who was called Gabriel Prosser in the year 1800.  Under his leadership, about 1000 slaves attacked Richmond, which was in the state of Virginia.  Nevertheless the rebellion failed and Gabriel Prosser was captured along with 36 of his followers and was hanged to death.  Then there was Nat Turner, who organized a powerful slave rebellion in the year 1831, which was perilous enough even to frighten the powerful Southern slave owners.
