What Do Performing Enhancing Drugs Do And Why Are They Used?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

By "performance enhancing drugs," you're referring to anabolic steroids. There are several different kinds of steroids, such as the ones like Prednisone that you might get from your doctor if you have a serious inflammation or swelling in your muscles or joints that's causing you pain. These are different from anabolic steroids; this type of steroid causes an increase in body and muscle mass. Anabolic steroids are controlled substances, meaning that you must have a doctor's prescription to use them. But many men and women who are athletes and want to increase, or enhance, their athletic performance use these steroids illegally to "pump up" or "bulk up" their muscles. Anabolic steroids are extremely dangerous; for men, they cause rage and aggression, shrinking of the testicles, infertility, and the development of breasts. With women, anabolic steroids cause an increase  or decrease in body hair, a decrease in breast tissue, infertility, and increased muscle mass. Most professional athletes take drug tests to make sure that they are not cheating by taking anabolic steroids. Many athletes who are caught using these steroids are disqualified from participating in sports events.
