When Was The Ivy Opened?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

They say that getting in is the most pleasure derived from eating a meal at the celebrity hole that is The Ivy. The Ivy was opened in 1917 by the then owner Abel Glandellini and the Maitre d' Hotel Mario Gallati. It became established in the 1930s when it was favored by various film and theatre personalities of that era including Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier.
To an apology by Abel Glandellini for the building works taking place when he was trying to create London's finest dinning area, the actress Alice Delysia replied "Don't worry, we will always come to see you, we will cling together like the ivy". She was quoting a popular song of the time, and the name stuck and is in use to this day.

The present owners are Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, who in the year 1990 undertook extensive repairs, refitting and refurbishment to return The Ivy to its former glory.
