Perhaps you mean under the ocean. If you are talking "underground", all mountains extend to the center of the Earth.

Himalaya is not a mountain. It's name of mountain range in which Mt Everest( the highest mountain of the world )lies. Yes Mt Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It was named after sir george everest in the year 1865 before that it was know as mount 15.

It lies in Solukhumbu district of Country Nepal. Nepalese, the citizens of nepal call it "SAGARMATHA" which means top of the world. Its height it 8848 metres.

you may even find someone saying it lies in tibet, but the peak of everest lies in nepal. The surface area at the peak is about 7 square metres. Climbing it from nepal is tough and hard so most mountaineers climb it from tibet region.

Sir Edmund Hillary( New zealander) and Tenzing norgey( Nepali) were first to climb it. Actually Tenzing Norgey was first and hillary was some minute late. They climbed it in 1953. Nepal is also known as country of mountains as it has 8 of the world's top 10 highest mountains. It is also know as land of brave people as you know the Gorkhas(Gurkhas) were from Nepal.

From base to summit the highest mountain in the world is Mauna Kea in Hawaii, but a lot of this mountain is actually under sea, so the tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest, at 29,000 feet above sea level.
