Where And When Was Football Invented?

For a long time many thought modern day football was invented by the English but a book found in Aberdeen written in the 16th Century suggests Scotland has a real claim on this. Its the first book written that details the modern game well before the English claim.
Scotland invented football.

Modern football as most people know it was invented in
England, however, you will probably encounter Scottish nationalists who will
try to bend the truth in favour of Scotland, variations of football were
claimed to have been invented beforehand by many countries across the world,
but 'football' as it is played today, was invented in England.

The original game which is now referred to as football or soccer was "a favorite way of passing the time among Julius Caesar's legions," They introduced it to ancient Britons in the middle of the first century BC. According to some chroniclers, when things got really rough, the legions used "the skullsof slaughtered Britons" as balls.
The Romans introduced the first version of the game to many of their colonies, Briton being one of them, along with currency, laws, roads and baths. The rules have changed throughout the years and the game has evolved into many others, such as grid iron, rugby, rugby league etc etc, but it was the Romans who kicked off the game we now know as football.

Different cultures played soccer like games a long time ago. The earliest variations of soccer like games were played almost 3000 years ago. The soccer type game was traced far back in 1004 B.C. In Japan. Romans were also used to play soccer type game. Two hundred years ago David Wedderburn wrote a book (1633) Vocabula which tells about the foundation of Football Association (FA) in England. There is much debate about the origins of the sports game football - which is widely known as "soccer", with American Football being a different kind of game (but borne out of the same concept). Also known as "The Beautiful Game", football attracts a great amount of interest and competition across the world - which has made events such as the World Cup a very exciting time for the nations involved.
It has been suggested that football was played in a basic form in the 12th Century. Some theories show that it originated from Canada - others want to believe that it could only come from the mighty shores of Brazil (but there is little evidence of this). There are also snippets of researched history which suggest forms of the game were played in Ancient China, Greece and Roman eras.
It is proven by historical records that football in England arose in the 1800's, when rugby football and "association" football branched off into two seperate competitive sports. The word "soccer" is a slang translation from the word "association" which derived from the founding of The Football Association in England in 1863.
It is therefore nevertheless not "who" invented football but perhaps when it was made an organised, official sport - and the answer to that would of course be owed to the England FA which was closely followed with the founding of the Scottish, Irish and Welsh FA's.

Oldest leather football: Discovered in Stirling Castle, Scotland.
Oldest pitch markings: Found in Perthshire, Scotland.
First mention of "goalkeeper", to truly differentiate the game from any other ball games: Aberdeen, Scotland.
First football club ever founded: In Edinburgh, Scotland.
First ever international game: Played in Glasgow, Scotland (where England were stunned by the Scots who had produced the passing game. England played a 1-1-8 formation where passing was frowned upon: One player, running with the ball, backed by a horseshoe formation as back up lest he be tackled and lose the ball, being the fashion).
Smaller things along the way include: The first 50,000 crowd, the first 100,000 crowd, heading of the ball, the first all-ticket game, the first ground with turnstiles, the first use of substitutes, the invention of the crossbar, the standardisation of free kicks and half time... All from Scotland.
Add to this, the fact that the English themselves named the Scots players the "Scotch Professors", and you get an idea of which country taught the other.
England standardised the rules, and produced the first FA and league (instigated by a Scotsman), and started the first cup competition (with Queen's Park FC, from Scotland - at the time, the largest and most advanced club in Britain - invited to take part and pay their contribution to the purchasing of the silverware).
Scotland is responsible for the most important footballing firsts.

The football club registered in Edinburgh in the early 1800's, which is claimed to be the first, was associated with a game that allowed picking the ball up, so it was not affiliated with the game as we know it today. The first clubs to play the modern version of the game originated in England, and it was in England that the rules and structure of the game were first written down and established. So England is the home of Football as is well documented, but the 1872 first international match between England and Scotland, and the Scotish tactics involved undoubtedly played a fundamental part in the development of the game. But that is the history of football ever since it left England, it has been developed and refined by many countries and cultures to create what it is today, the world game. The beautiful game.

It actually was started in China, and separately in Rome. The game which the Romans exported throughout the empire must be the game which started off the various versions of football, the Chinese had a game which resembles football and probably much earlier than the Romans, but the Chinese did not export it and were insular in character, the game which the Brits like to claim as their invention was actually invented in Italy, Roman Italy, and exported by the Roman Legions into Briton.

By Football if one means Soccer as it is more popularly known, then the game is said to have a history dating back thousands of years. There are records of a game called Cuju played in China about 4000 years ago which resembled football in some ways.
In fact there have been mentions of a game somewhat similar to football being played in various parts of the World throughout history. The Greeks, the Romans, the Mexicans, the Japanese and the Eskimos have all played a game involving the use of their legs, a spherical object and in some cases a goalpost at some time or the other in their history.
However, the place that is credited to be the birthplace of modern day Football are the British Isles with records of matches being played between different villages in the middle ages. In fact a recent discovery of a book written by a Scottish teacher, David Wedderburn way back in 1633 describes in detail a match of football played in Aberdeen, Scotland.
According to another story a game closely similar to Rugby was already being played at the Rugby School in 1823 when a player William W Ellis ran the ball into the net thereby giving birth to another form of football better known today as American Football. The date for the start of modern American Football though is said to be 1876, invented by a man named Walter Camp who had supposedly heard the Ellis story.

No one person invented football. It was mostly played by bored army men in the medieval ages, who used to kick about, rolled up rags and even mens/ladies heads. .

People have played games with a ball through most of recorded history, The ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans all had versions of it. For instance. The Romans called it Harpastum. Early English football was very violent and had few rules - it developed gradually but the modern game wasn't invented until 1863. You can learn more here.
