What Did Shakespeare Call His Company Of Actors?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Well, they weren't Shakespeare's to call, they were, originally called after whichever patron gave them his name, hence, Lord Strange's men, Pembroke's men etc, etc. Eventually, when Lord Hunsdon took over, he gave them his Royal title, The Lord Chamberlain's men, and so it was until Elizabeth granted them the title The Queen's men, which they used until her death in 1603, and then they were the King's men, (James1). Finally, there were only two acting companies left, the Queen's men, and the Admiral's men, they took the office of the Lord High Admiral of England, Lord Thomas Howerd of Effingham, and their principal actor was Edward Alleyn.
