What Are Atoms Composed Of?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

An Atom is a strange thing. Although they make up everything, including the most solid of objects around us, the vast majority of an atom is actually nothing but air. But an atom has three sub atomic particles that actually make it up. These are electrons, protons and neutrons. The protons and neutrons are contained in the nucleus of the atom, at its centre, whereas the electrons are located around the nucleus.

The protons and neutrons are made of of quarks.  Be they Up Down Charm Strange op or Bottom quarks.

also scientists believe that there are even smaller parts of matter which are vibrating strings. This is known as string theory. And these strings make up everything in the world.

Most of an atom is empty. But the three major subatomic particles are:
        • protons: Positively charged particles; found in the nucleus of the atom
        • neutrons: Neutral particles; found in the nucleus of the atom
        • electrons: Negatively charged particles; found orbiting the nucleus
Protons and neutrons account for most of the mass of the atom. There are quarks, which make up those particles, but that gets complicated.
