Try taking him to the local humane society and see if they may be able to help you or pay for your vet bill. It sounds like an abscess or a hematoma. An abscess can come from a cat bite and they're very, very nasty. A hematoma usually comes from a ear infection or ear mites. They will scratch and shake their head so much until a vein will burst in the ear flap and pump blood in making the ear flap swollen and painful.

Almost all vets will take cats in your situation, just ask them and explain the situation.

I was down  out and my dog had a puppy that was so sickly... I did a walk-in at a vet and one of the girls gave me a minit, and a starter pack of pills. Some will, some won't- explain yourself earnestly to them and I think that they'd help. That is why they got into that business, to save suffering... Good luck, and God bless.
