The term 'band saw' is derived from the blade, which is composed of a narrow band made up of toothed metal. The band is positioned on two wheels which are located in the same vertical plane having a gap between them. Band saws are generally most effective to cut uneven shapes. The radius of the curve which can be cut on a given saw is dependant on how wide the band is.
