How Can I Protect Myself For Tenants Rights?

I live in Florida and I rented a new home for 3 years, I verbally discussed with landlord that lease would be expiring in 2 weeks, he then informed me that rent would increase $225 and I told him I could not afford that and I would be moving out, in retaliation he did not show up for walk around inspection and he sued me for damages absorbing my deposit, charging me for an additional month's rent after lease termed and normal wear and tear damages of $3800, how can I protect myself?
