Are There Apostrophes In The Words Dos And Donts?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Strictly speaking there should be just one apostrophe: the one in don't s. That is to show that don't is really two words (do not) and the second "o" is missing.

You use apostrophes either to show where a letter or letters has been missed out (don't, you're and so on ) or to show possession, eg:

    John's bag

    The children's clothes

The apostrophe shows who is the owner of the bag or the clothes. You don't use an apostrophe to show a plural - it's 12 apples, not 12 apple's.

So as "dos and don'ts" is an example of plural forms and not possession, they shouldn't, logically,  have an apostrophe.

    BUT:

The plurals of words and letters are allowed to break this rule. So, as "do" and "don't" are words and not things, their standard plural form is :  do's and don't's
