What Are The Isotopes? What Are The Isobars?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The atoms of the same element having different mass numbers are called isotopes. Isotopes have same atomic numbers (hence same number of electrons and protons) but different mass number because they differ in the number of neutrons that they contain, e.g. hydrogen has three isotopes, that is Protium, Deutorium, and Tritium.

It is possible for atoms of two elements to have the same mass number, but their atomic number can never be same. Such elements are known as isobars, e.g. argon and calcium have the same mass number, that is 40 and carbon and nitrogen have the same mass number that is 14.
